A Court with Purpose
The Shelby County Mental Health Court (MHC) is more than a courtroom — it is a bridge between the justice system and the behavioral health system. Created to serve individuals struggling with serious and persistent mental illness, the Court provides an alternative pathway that focuses on treatment over punishment.
By integrating mental health care, case management, and community support, the Court addresses the root causes of criminal behavior, reduces jail overcrowding, and enhances public safety.
History & Foundation
The Shelby County Mental Health Court was established in response to the growing recognition that traditional criminal courts were not equipped to address the unique needs of individuals with mental illness. Too often, these individuals cycled through the system without receiving proper care.
